Nutrition Basics: What CAN We Learn?

In my last blog I had a nice count down till training for Mount Kilimanjaro started. As you read in one of Sergeant Kili’s past blogs, our training program is a progressive yet intense schedule intended to get us fit enough to summit. Being a former soccer player and having ran a marathon just last year, I have always been conscious of just how IMPORTANT it is to stick to training plans like the one given to me. What I only learn recently, post soccer but during my marathon training is how important nutrition is in that journey!
“Maverick…. What they heck. Of course, nutrition is important.”
I know it is an obvious point that nutrition is important but the degree of its importance can go over people’s head. It is 100% true that what you eat tonight will affect how you feel tomorrow. This blog is about the key pointers I learned about nutrition during my marathon training and over my years of competitive soccer. And though hiking is much different than running, these are my universal tips!
Maverick Nutrition Tips
Complex Carbs are KEY: Make sure to consume carbs the night before a big hike. Though your body can only hold so much carbohydrates, it is important that you are fueled to capacity. Complex carbs include: potatoes, pasta, beans, and grains.
Eat your breakfast: An obvious one, but a crucial one. Once again, fuel up with carbohydrates and quality proteins such as peanut butter, eggs, nuts, lean meat. Fruits are also welcome!
Eat Every Hour Of Your Hike: Or two hours if that suits you. By eat every hour you will help your body keep a constant energy level. Ideal snack include carb gels or drinks, healthy trail mix, apples bananas, or any other high carb and low sugar snack.
HYDRATION: Drink water every chance you get, especially the night before the hike. Make sure you are drinking a cup of water every 20 minutes (this can differ for runners). If you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated! Get a hydration backpack to make it easier to stay hydrated on your hikes.
I hope you enjoyed my tips! I’m not a nutritionist but I have learned a lot from past experience and through other hikers. Reach out if you have any questions on your own hiking nutrition!
Until our next adventure,
Maverick
